Five steps from idea to ink

Screen printing rewards a clean start. Get the details right up front and the press does the rest. Here is exactly how an order moves through our Downtown LA shop.

1. Send the brief

Tell us four things: the design, the garment, the quantity and where the print goes (front, back, sleeve). Add your deadline. Use the quick quote form or email sales@tbsp.la. We reply within one business day.

2. Pick the blank

Choose from the catalog or bring your own garments (see printing on your shirts). Tees, hoodies, long sleeves, tanks, totes and more all run on press. Not sure which tee? Our favorite blanks are a good shortcut.

3. Free art check and proof

Every file gets a free art check before anything is printed. We look for low resolution, lines too thin to hold ink, and colors that will shift on your garment. Then you get a proof showing placement, size and ink colors. Nothing goes to press until you approve it.

4. Screens and press

We separate your design into colors and burn one screen per color. Each color is printed in sequence, then the ink is heat-cured so it bonds to the fabric. Want a softer hand or a raised texture? See our inks and effects.

5. Pickup or delivery

Grab your order at 2710 S Broadway or have it shipped. Need it bagged, tagged or sent to several addresses? That is fulfillment.

What makes a design screen-print friendly?

  • Fewer colors, bigger impact. Each color is its own screen, so a tight palette keeps the job efficient.
  • Solid shapes. Bold type and graphics print crisp and opaque.
  • Real resolution. Vector art or a large raster file at print size.
  • Gradients are possible. Halftones can fake a fade. Read more in silk screen print styles.

Is screen printing the right method?

If your design is bold with a few solid colors, yes, almost always. It gives you the best price per piece and the toughest print. Full-color photo art? Look at DTG or DTF. Stitched logo on polos or caps? Go with embroidery.

Up against a deadline?

Normal (about 2 weeks), Rush (1 week, +15%) and Super Rush (3 business days, +30%) turnaround options are available. Tell us your date when you ask for a quote and we will confirm. More on Rush and Super Rush printing in Los Angeles.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What file format should I send?

Vector files such as AI, EPS, SVG or PDF are ideal. A high-resolution PNG also works. If your file needs cleanup, the free art check will tell you.

Can I mix sizes and garment colors in one order?

Yes. Sizes can be mixed freely. Different garment colors can share a design, though dark and light garments may need different ink setups, so tell us the colors when you request a quote.

Do I approve a proof before printing?

Yes. You see a proof showing placement, size and ink colors before we go to press.

What if I only need 10 shirts?

Our minimum is 12 pieces per order, for every decoration method, so we would need at least 12 shirts.
